My Student
I selected for my student, a third grader in CP123 with ASD and other needs.
Strengths of this Student
The student loves music and loves to be a leader. He answers questions correctly and is a talented singer and performer. With our first singing assessment, he earned the best score possible. He's very happy and motivated and he greets me with a cheerful, bright, attitude.
Weaknesses of this Student
My student will often blurt out comments and interrupt. Sometimes his cheerful and positive attitude will go too far and he will be a "goofball" distracting other kids. He also gets easily distracted and sometimes has conflicts with other students in class (particularly another 3rd grade boy who also has ASD). He works well in groups with some kids, but not others.
Needs of this Student
This student always has a para with him in my class, but that para is also responsible for another student simultaneously. After talking with the special ed. team at my school, I was given some great advice and strategies that work particularly well for him. The moment he does something inappropriate, I ask him "Are you ready to learn?" or "Are you doing what your classmates are doing right now?" If not, then I tell him to go to the "think tank" or the resource room to work it out. He really needs a clear box built for him where expectations are concerned and he needs consistency with consequences for his behavior.
